6th grade Middle School Launch:
MS Launch is designed to help 6th grade students have a smooth transition to middle school. The focus is how to be a successful Viking at Selah Middle School. Topics include getting to know our school, how to have positive relationships, being a successful and organized Viking, my values, developing healthy habits and how to help our school be a place filled with kindness.
6th grade Leadership:
Leadership class is designed for students to learn ways they can serve their school and community, both today and in the future.
6th Grade Brainology:
Brainology provides students with a unique opportunity to develop a growth mindset. Using a scientifically-based program called Brainology, students will do activities and complete lessons related to having a successful mindset now and in the futur
7th grade Career Exploration:
Careers class introduces middle school students to practical information about preparing for the working world while still in middle school. Students will develop the personal-branding skills to represent themselves to potential employers, learn about career clusters and high-growth career opportunities and be exposed to job-hunting skills needed to get a job. Learn the importance of technical and soft skills in meeting employer expectations and keeping a job.

Elective Rotation of Art, STEM and AG Explore - In these introductory classes, 6th graders will rotate to Art, STEM and Agriculture to be exposed to a variety of possible pathways.

Band - In this course students perform at concerts, festivals, and contests throughout the year. Students play a variety of music.

Choir - In this course students perform at concerts, festivals, and more thoughout the year. Students sing a variety of music from traditional to popular tunes.

7th and 8th grade electives offered at SMS and Pathways they align with:
Into to Computer Science 1 - This course focuses on Foundational Principles to Game Development. Students will continue from Conditionals (6th Grade STEM rotation), learning how to loop and use precoded libraries. The result will be coding basic online games - for example, an online version of Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Computer Science 2 - This course focuses on Graphics. Students will enter the world of graphic design. After learning how to draw lines and shapes, students will make these creations animated.

Robotics - This is an introductory course into the world of robotics. Students will learn about robotics and programming through hands-on experiences and challenges using VEX IQ robotics equipment. They will learn about robotics in industry and start building simple machines and progress to fully operational robots that can perform simple tasks.

Digital - This course introduces students to the elements of art and principles of design needed for creating photographs: including basic layout and design, using the digital camera effectively, applying the Rule of Thirds, and other compositional frameworks. Students will be introduced to digital photographic equipment, software, materials, and methods through hands-on practice. The focus will be on learning how to become a good photographer.

Mixed Media Art - This is a studio course where students will experience different techniques for drawing and painting. This course will focus primarily on the strategic thinking that artists use to develop a complex, original, and meaningful work of art.

Sculpture - This is a studio course in which students will build three dimensional works of art using clay, paper mache, cardboard, or other found objects. Students will learn about how structural integrity, form, materials, and space interact together to express concepts, thoughts and feelings.

Life Prep - This course is an introduction to family consumer science and will focus on how to be successful in everyday life. We'll spend some time in the kitchen cooking, in the greenhouse growing plants, and working with reading, writing and math skills to analyze consumer issues and recipes. We will also explore ways to connect to our culture and the heritage of the land we live on acknowledging Indigenous wisdom and the connections we all have to our roots.

Green Architecture - Today’s students have grown up in an age of “green” choices. In this course, students learn how to apply this concept to the fields of architecture and construction by exploring dimensioning, measuring, and architectural sustainability as they design affordable housing units using Autodesk’s® 3D architectural design software.

Intro to Apparel and Design - Learning by doing is the key to leadership class. Students will practice their leadership skills by completing projects such as organizing spirit week, planning student council elections, assisting teachers and so much more.

Intro to Spanish - In this introductory class, students will delve into basic vocabulary and grammar essentials, focusing on practical communication skills. Through interactive activites, games and dialogues, students will build confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish. Cultural elements will be woven throughout, offering students a glimpse into the rish tapestry of Spanish-Speaking countries.
